Corazon Cory Aquino dies

Corazon Cory AquinoCorazon "Cory" Aquino 1933-2009, the former president of the Philippines, has died. She was 76. Aquino, a self-styled housewife and mother, became an international symbol for nonviolent political resistance when she took over as the first female president of the Philippines in 1986. That came three years after her husband, an opposition leader, was assassinated.

Her famous nickname was Cory and was popular for the Philippine People Power's movement.

The Philippines is still a raucous political hothouse. And every now and then it seems to return to the brink. But the dire days of deadly coup plots are over. Corazon Aquino died a revered figure, after an excruciating struggle with colon cancer, in a hospital in the Philippines.

Corazon Cojuangco was born into one of the wealthiest families in the islands. Fated to be married off in one dynastic match or the other, she was courted by and fell in love with Benigno Aquino Jr., a brilliant and ambitious journalist turned politician whose own family was as illustrious though not quite as wealthy as her baronial clan. The marriage would help propel Benigno's career even as "Cory" was a cipher at his side, the high-born wife whose social ministrations at smoke-filled political sessions flattered her husband's supporters. Benigno's popularity soon challenged Ferdinand Marcos, who had been elected President in 1965. And so, when Marcos assumed dictatorial power in 1972, he threw his rival into jail. Corazon then became her husband's instrument, smuggling messages out of prison and raising funds for the opposition. But as long as he lived, she was merely an extension of Benigno Aquino.

Bobby Robson dies

Football legend and former manager of the England football team, Bobby Robson, has died aged 76 after a long fight with cancer.

The coach led the national side of his home nation between 1982 and 1990 , guiding the team to the semifinal of the 1990 World Cup, where his side were defeated by Germany in a penalty shootout.

Robson's curriculum vitae as a club coach was long and successful including spells with Fulham, Ipswich and Newcastle United in England, PSV Eindhoven in Holland, Sporting Lisbon and Porto in Portugal and Barcelona in Spain.

His last job in club football was as manager of then English Premier League side Newcastle United, who he led between 1999 to 2004.

As a player, Robson was a key member of the Fulham and West Bromwich Albion team during the 1950s and 1960s and also won 20 caps for England.

I suppose there will be more buzz from people interested in his funeral dates and collectibles. I won't be surprise there are also people interested in Bobby Robson affiliate program.

Husband, don't buy a Toyota VIOS for your wife

Toyota VIOS for your wifeA married couple is driving along a highway doing a steady forty miles per hour. The wife is behind the wheel. Her husband suddenly looks cross at her and speaks in a clear voice.

'Darling,' he says. 'I know we've been married for twenty years, but I want a divorce.' The wife says nothing, keeps looking at the road ahead but slowly increases her speed to 45 mph.

The husband speaks again. 'I don't want you to try and talk me out of it', he says, 'because I've been having an affair with your best friend, and she's a far better lover than you are.' Again the wife stays quiet, but grips the steering wheel more tightly and slowly increases the speed to 55 mph.

He pushes his luck. 'I want the house,' he says insistently. Up to 60 mph.'I want the car, too,' he continues. 65 mph. 'And,' he says, 'I'll have the bank accounts, all the credit cards and the boat.'

The car slowly starts veering towards a massive concrete bridge. This makes him a wee bit nervous, so he asks her: 'Isn't there anything you want?'. The wife at last replies - in a quiet and controlled voice. 'No,I've got everything I need..' she says.

Oh, really?' he inquires, 'So what have you got?'

Just before they slam into the wall at 75 mph, the wife turns to him and smiles. ..... 'The airbag.'.... so never underestimate how a woman thinks. Moral of the story: Buy Toyota VIOS as it has only one airbag (for driver only). The husband sure die and wife gets everything!

So, for a husband don't buy a Toyota VIOS for your wife.

Happy House, Happy Owner

Happy House, Happy OwnerMany of us are finding it hard to move house as it is still difficult to get a loan, so how do you move on with your life and change the energy and climate inside your home, while you wait for the climate to change outside your home? Here are a few tips to help you give your house and your life fresh energy (or Chi in Chinese). I am also sure if you do these following things you will find that the changes inside, will reflect new opportunities that will come your way in your life, on the outside. After all, good vibes generate positive feeling.

Tip 1. One Step at a Time: If the thought of cleaning out your house all at once is really overwhelming, then decide which room you are going to start with and begin there. Take one room, one corner at a time. Maybe it will take you weeks, rather than days, but that's fine, just focus on one room, one week and then another the next. If you only have time to do an hour in one go, then do that. It doesn't matter how long it's going to take, it might take you three months, but three months is going to pass anyway, whether you clear out your house or not. So you might as well start and have it done by then.

Tip 2. Fewer Belongings: If you haven't used something in the last six months or one year at the very most, then get rid of it. Every object takes up space, but I am not just talking about physical space, I am also talking about emotional, mental and energetic space. If your house is crowded with a lot of 'stuff', you probably are also the sort of person who has a lot of internal chatter. As a result, it often means that there is much less space for new, creative ideas to come in. You will find that if you get rid of some of your belongings, your mind will also free up and it might make you more productive. There is an old saying, Less Is Always More.

Tip 3. The Garage: As soon as you've cleared up the space, get all your unwanted objects out of the house, especially plastic stuff. But don't just hide them in a place where you can't see them i.e. in your garage or in the back room. Even if the garage isn't attached to the house there is still an attachment to it by keeping it there, so clean that space out as well. If you're not sure about an object, give it to charity. It may ease your mind that someone else will get pleasure from having it. Recommended reading: Sell Your Unwanted Stuff Online For Cash

Tip 4. Re-energizing Your Home
: Give the walls a new coat of paint, so your house looks fresh and has new energy. If you're renting and you think it is the landlord's responsibility, then ask them to do it. If they won't, then just do it yourself. You are doing it for you and even though by rights it may be their responsibility I suggest that you don't use that as an excuse to not move forward, as you are the one who has to live there and it's your life, so you might as well do it. Other suggestions include new wall arts and smiley pillows.

Tip 5. Start now: Write down a list of all the things in your house that you have wanted to do and have not got round to doing. Perhaps you have been meaning to fix a cupboard, a drawer or a door. Or maybe you have been meaning to buy new bed sheets or change your room around. If you've had it on your mind to do, then now is the time.

Following all or some of the tips above will definitely make you happy. A happy house, a happy owner.

Bing.com Powered Yahoo Search

Powered Yahoo SearchMicrosoft is showing more fangs in their bid to increase their search engines market share, despite the over-buzzed of their rebranded search engine, BING.com. Aside from spending tonnes of money in publicity and promotion, Microsoft is eating up its competitor to challenge Google search engine share.

Microsoft and Yahoo reached a long-awaited partnership Wednesday in a bid to challenge Google's dominance in online search.

Under the 10-year deal, Yahoo.com and Bing.com will maintain their own branding but search results on Yahoo.com will say "powered by Bing." Yahoo, in turn, will be responsible for attracting premium advertisers.

Microsoft will pay Yahoo 88% of the revenue it gains from searches on Yahoo's sites. Microsoft will also have the rights to integrate Yahoo's search technology into its own existing Web search platforms.

Yahoo said the agreement will modestly decrease its overall revenue but increase its operating income by about $500 million annually.

Google meanwhile commented that "There has traditionally been a lot of competition online, and our experience is that competition brings about great things for users. We're interested to learn more about the deal."

Schumacher Drastic F1 Comeback

F1 ComebackIn a surprise move, Michael Schumacher is back to the F1 racing track as a replacement for injured Ferrari driver Felipe Massa. The 40-year-old German, who retired from the sport in 2006, won five of his seven titles while competing for Ferrari, and has retained his links with the Italian manufacturer as a team advisor.

Team Ferrari later confirmed Schumacher's return in a statement: "Ferrari intends to entrust Michael Schumacher with Felipe Massa's car for as long as the Brazilian driver is not able to race.

"Michael Schumacher has shown his willingness and in the next few days he will undergo a specific program of preparation at the end of which it will be possible to confirm his participation in the championship starting with the European Grand Prix."

Microsoft Gunning For Yahoo Search

Yahoo SearchIn an attempt to boost their search engines market share, Microsoft is now focusing on their competitor which is Yahoo Search. The Microsoft deal to acquire Yahoo Search traffic has been on and off the table. Analysts have speculated that Yahoo! will be paid $3 billion upfront but this is the sticking point that contribute to the non-conclusion of the deal.

So why is the deal on the table again? In a word, Bing. Microsoft’s shiny new search toy received enough promotional budget to create the buzz needed to steal a little search market share away from Yahoo in the past few months.

Think of Bing as the plucky and Yahoo as the far-reaching Brontosaurus that, (when combined together), become the aggressive enough to challenge the mighty that is Google. Estimates say that the Bing / Yahoo (or Microhoo) may be able to grab up to 30 percent of search market share – more than enough to make Google a little edgy.

Bloggie Cloggie - Story of a wasted publication

This is a real story of a teen blogger who was given an opportunity to write an article for one of the biggest newspaper publication in Malaysia. Not everyone have that kind of chance. The 15 years old blogger who has a blog named "Bloggie Cloggie" talks about her online adventures while attending public school in an article titled "Confessions of a teen blogger".

Towards the end of the article, she refers to her readers a few links to her friend's blog URL. That is generous of her. The mistake on her side was that she did not reveal her own blog URL. Curious readers probably want to drop by at her blog but was unable to because there is no link given.

Those potential visitors would then proceed to her friend's blog instead. This is a lost opportunity for free traffic. If you argued that she don't need fame, then why publish an article in a big publication when you know that it will create big (and free) publicity. After all, every bloggers yearn for those free spotlight and a spike in their site traffic.

When you run a query on Google for the keyword "bloggie cloggie", the results given probably deduced that the author's blog is located at http://ange7ying.blogspot.com. However, visiting that blog will run into an "Permission denied" error as the blog is not open to public. Duh. The "This blog is open to invited readers only" is not a good idea when you intend to blog for readership as well as money.

So, the lesson learned in this example is that, whenever you were given an opportunity to publish an article in a newspapers documentary section, online media or a press release, be sure to provide a link to your own blog for instant traffic. That process will definitely improve your blog exposure as well as popularity. That of course is not relevant if you hate readers and keep your blog entries all to yourself.

Hacking iPhone 3GS Encryption

Hacking iPhone Reports have emerged claiming that iPhone encryption is proven to be 'useless'. A hacker has demonstrated how it is possible to crack the encryption on the iPhone 3GS within two minutes using free software, allowing access to all of the data on the device - even photos and emails that have long been deleted.

The iPhone 3GS is the first iPhone model to include built-in encryption technology, which Apple believes allows it to rival the BlackBerry for business users.

The company claims hundreds of thousands of the devices are being used by companies and government organisations around the world.

But Jonathan Zdziarski, in an interview with Wired, demonstrated how it was just as easy to copy data - such as credit card details and passwords - from the new iPhone as it was on previous models, which didn’t feature encryption.

He has also published YouTube clips showing the processes required to remove the iPhone’s PIN lock and back-up encryption and then transfer videos, contacts, pictures, email and other personal data to a computer.

Even emails and photos that have been deleted a year ago can be accessed.

‘‘I don’t think any of us [developers] have ever seen encryption implemented so poorly before, which is why it’s hard to describe why it’s such a big threat to security,’’ said Zdziarski, an iPhone app developer, who also specialises in iPhone forensics.

He said the iPhone strangely decrypts the data automatically once one begins extracting the information from the phone using the Red Sn0w and Purple Ra1n software tools.

In an interview with geek website Ars Technica, Zdziarski likened the iPhone’s encryption to ‘‘putting privacy glass on half your shower door’’.

The ease with which the iPhone’s encryption can be broken is a stark contrast to that of the BlackBerry, which was built from the ground up as a secure business device and which entered the mainstream consumer market only much later.

Indeed, BlackBerry devices long lacked a built-in camera to prevent corporate secrets from being leaked.

One advanced security feature on the BlackBerry is the ability to erase all of its data automatically if it has not connected to the network for a certain amount of time.

The iPhone’s MobileMe service offers a similar feature, as well as the ability to pinpoint the location of a stolen iPhone, but both are rendered useless if the thief removes the SIM card and disables WiFi.

Apple claimed during its most recent earnings announcement that 20 per cent of Fortune 100 companies in the US had bought more than 10,000 iPhones each, while several Government organisations and other corporations bought 25,000 iPhones each.

Apple chief operating officer Tim Cook identified the new hardware encryption feature and other security enhancements as the iPhone’s biggest selling points for businesses.

But Zdziarski warned developers who were making business-oriented applications for the iPhone - such as one allowing tradies to accept credit card transactions in real time - that they could not fall back on Apple’s security systems.

‘‘If they’re relying on Apple’s security, then their application is going to be terribly insecure,” Zdziarski told Wired.

“Apple may be technically correct that [the iPhone 3GS] has an encryption piece in it, but it’s entirely useless toward security.”

Zdziarski is the author of the book iPhone Forensics: Recovering Evidence, Personal Data and Corporate Assets.

Alan Hashem, director of Sydney-based IT consultancy Insight IT, has provided iPhones to about 12 of the company’s 15 staff, four of whom have the new iPhone 3G S model. They use the devices to access clients’ computers remotely and fix technical support issues.

Hashem said he was concerned about the iPhone’s security vulnerabilities but did not think there was a high chance that someone with the skills to perform Zdziarski’s hack would steal his employees' iPhones.

He said the handset’s features and third-party applications made it worth the risk.

‘‘We’re at a lot more risk with computers and desktops,’’ he said.

Counting Money Can Make You Happier

Money Can Make You HappierWe all know money buys luxuries, necessities and intangibles. We also know that money buys time. When was the last time Donald Trump waited in line for anything? Now there is evidence that just counting money can produce valuable psychological benefits. According to a new study published in the journal Psychological Science, thumbing through your cash can reduce emotional and physical pain as well as increase feelings of internal strength, fearlessness and confidence. The study also finds that there is an equally true flip side to this coin: When people are reminded of their recent spending they report higher levels of both psychological and physical distress.

Focusing on the symbolic power of money, the study's authors, Xinyue Zhou of Sun Yat-Sen University, Kathleen Vohs of the University of Minnesota and Roy Baumeister of Florida State University, started with a simple hypothesis: reminders of money can alter how people experience social interactions—especially social acceptance and rejection.

According to the researchers, the participants in their tests who had counted money reported greater feelings of inner strength and self-sufficiency. In addition, those who had counted money reported lower levels of pain.

Their other findings: Reminders of having spent money aggravated feelings of social distress; and both social rejection and ideas of physical discomfort fueled participants' desire for money as well as made them less generous.

So what does any of this mean for people in the real-world—especially in this down and out economy? One implication, not entirely surprising, is that a job loss may pose an additional challenge. A layoff is a kind of rejection and that could increase a person's desire for money at the very same time he or she has less than before, explains Kathleen Vohs, co-designer of the study. Put another way: "The recession can make [people] crave what they can't have," Vohs says.

Fortunately, the research also offers a possible solution for landing a new job. "It might be handy to sit down and count a stack of money before going out to the job interview," says Roy Baumeister, one of the study's authors. That is if you have money. Another option? "Set up a screen saver that shows money," says Vohs. "That might help ameliorate some of those feelings of being rejected."

And while money can't buy love, counting money could help you find that special person. "Maybe young men who are going out to bars to try to meet women should count money," muses Baumeister. "I gather they have to approach a lot and get rejected a lot. I am not a specialist in bars but it would make the men feel strong and probably make them not as bothered about being rejected over and over."

The Tide of Google Wave

Tide of Google WaveGoogle Wave is a real-time communication platform. It combines aspects of email, instant messaging, wikis, web chat, social networking, and project management to build one elegant, in-browser communication client. You can bring a group of friends or business partners together to discuss how your day has been or share files. Google Wave sound cool and if Google does not manage the project properly, the audience will sure be giddy. And there is also another fellow who commented that Google Wave or Twitter or Facebook has not created a single meaningful contribution to the economy.

Google Wave has a lot of innovative features, but here are just a few:

- Real-time: In most instances, you can see what someone else is typing, character-by-character.

- Embeddability: Waves can be embedded on any blog or website.

- Applications and Extensions: Just like a Facebook (Facebook) application or an iGoogle gadget, developers can build their own apps within waves. They can be anything from bots to complex real-time games.

- Wiki functionality: Anything written within a Google Wave can be edited by anyone else, because all conversations within the platform are shared. Thus, you can correct information, append information, or add your own commentary within a developing conversation.

- Open source: The Google Wave code will be open source, to foster innovation and adoption amongst developers

- Playback: You can playback any part of the wave to see what was said.

- Natural language: Google Wave can auto-correct your spelling, even going as far as knowing the difference between similar words, like “been” and “bean.” It can also auto-translate on-the-fly.

- Drag-and-drop file sharing: No attachments; just drag your file and drop it inside Google Wave and everyone will have access

Tide of Google Wave.

Google Wave Terminology

Google Wave does has its own lingo – you have to learn a few definitions if you’re going to really understand this new communication platform.
- Wave, Wavelet, Blip (BLIP), Document, Extension, Gadgets, Robots, Embeded Wave.

Google Wave Gadget

A Wave Gadget is one of two types of Google Wave extensions. Gadgets are fully-functional applications. According to Google, gadgets are primarily for changing the look and feel of waves, although this seems to only scratch the surface of the potential of a wave gadget.

Google Wave Robots

Robots are the other type of Google Wave extension. Robots are like having another person within a Google Wave conversation, except that they’re automated. They’re a lot like the old IM bots of the past, although far more robust. Robots can modify information in waves, interact with users, communicate with others waves, and pull information from outside sources.

Google Wave Embeds

Wave embeds are a little more complex than embedding a YouTube (YouTube) video onto your blog, yet in the end, that’s really what Google Wave Embeds are: a way to take Google Waves (google waves) onto a third party website. Embedded Waves support many of the functions of the actual Google Wave client, including dragging-and-dropping files.

BlackBerry users in Dubai tricked by Etisalat

BlackBerry users in Dubai tricked by EtisalatUnknowingly, BlackBerry users in the Middle East business centers of Dubai and Abu Dhabi who were directed by their service provider (Etisalat) to upgrade their devices were actually installing spy software that could allow outsiders to peer inside, according to the device maker. And this probably created a record of the first spyware for BlackBerry.

While many questions about the breach remain unanswered, including who ordered it sent and why, analysts say the disclosure highlights the security risks posed by increasingly popular smartphones like the BlackBerry.

Richard M. Smith, an Internet security and privacy consultant at Boston Software Forensics, said smartphones are “the perfect personal spying devices” because as tiny computers they can be programmed to send back a broad range of information.

“This is an evolving threat. As the technology advances, the security problems follow behind,” he said.

Research in Motion (RIM) Ltd, the Canadian company that makes the mobile gadgets, said in a statement e-mailed yesterday that it did not authorise the software installation and “was not involved in any way in the testing, promotion or distribution of this software application.”

It is directing customers on how to remove the software.

Spy in your pocket

“Independent sources have concluded that it is possible that the installed software could ... enable unauthorised access to private or confidential information stored on the user’s smartphone,” the company said in an eight-page statement strongly distancing itself from the decision to install the software.

The Abu Dhabi-based mobile service provider Etisalat, which is majority owned by the United Arab Emirates government, earlier sent text messages to BlackBerry customers in the country instructing them to follow a link to update their phones. Etisalat says it has more than 145,000 BlackBerry users in the UAE.

Some customers who installed the new software said it quickly drained the device’s batteries, prompting hundreds of complaints to Etisalat and sending users to Internet message boards looking for ways to fix the problem.

In a statement issued following complaints last week, Etisalat described the software change as an “upgrade ... required for service enhancements.” It said the upgrades were required and linked to a handover to the 3G wireless technology standard.

The BlackBerry maker dismissed that explanation.

“RIM is not aware of any technical network concerns with the performance of BlackBerry smartphones on Etisalat’s network in the UAE,” the company said, adding that it “does not endorse this software application.”

Etisalat did not respond to requests for comment yesterday.

Big mystery

RIM said the application users unwittingly installed was a surveillance program developed by a privately held Silicon Valley company called SS8 Networks Inc.

SS8 describes itself in a company brochure as “the leader in communications interception and a worldwide provider of regulatory compliant, electronic intercept and surveillance solutions.”

It markets its services to intelligence agencies, law enforcement and communications service providers.

A person who answered the phone at SS8’s Middle East office in Dubai declined to comment and refused to provide a name. He said the company’s regional head, Derek Roga, was out of the country. A spokesman at the company’s headquarters in Milpitas, California, could not be reached.

It is not clear why Etisalat encouraged users to install the application or if any private information was compromised.

Smith, the security and privacy consultant, said a data thief tapping into a smartphone in theory could turn on the microphone to listen in on a private conversation, provide a list of previous calls or send back the user’s location.

Bruce Schneier, an author and chief security technology officer at BT, the British telecommunications operator, said smartphones are “not inherently more secure.”

“We’ve mostly been protected because it’s annoying and inconvenient to write software for these devices,” he said.

The Persian Gulf country is the Arab world’s largest economy after Saudi Arabia. Its most populous city Dubai is trying to position itself as a leading commercial hub, making BlackBerry devices popular among its professional elite. — AP

Queensland Police Fighting WiFi Robbery

Queensland PoliceThe Australian Queensland Police fraud squad says it will be the first police force in the world to go on "wardriving" missions to warn homes and businesses if their wireless networks are not secure.

Detective Superintendent Brian Hay said criminals were piggy-backing on the WiFi connections of ordinary computer users and using them to anonymously commit crimes such as fraud and identity theft.

The process of searching for open wireless networks using a laptop or handheld in a moving vehicle is known in the geek community as "wardriving".

Many home networks can be accessed by anyone within range because strong security settings are often not enabled and passwords are rarely changed from the default setting.

"All unsecured WiFi networks out there are open for exploitation by the crooks and the average mum and dad don't understand the vulnerabilities," Detective Superintendent Hay said in a phone interview.

"More and more houses are going into WiFi and setting up multiple computers on a network, and not appropriately securing them.

"These things are going to be exploited more and more as time goes on ... we want to close the holes before too much damage is done."

Detective Superintendent Hay said it was important for police to get "ahead of the game" as crooks were now sharing information on satellite maps showing vulnerable areas with large numbers of unsecured networks.

He blamed computer equipment sellers for not doing enough to educate customers on the importance of security.

He said it was illegal to use someone else's network bandwidth without their permission, even if that bandwidth was not used to commit another crime such as identity theft.

Queensland Police has not yet decided how many officers it will task with seeking out unsecure networks, but it is calling on the private sector to help out with equipment and expertise.

Detective Superintendent Hay said the operation would be limited to Queensland but the idea might filter down to other states.

"I actually have not heard of this being done anywhere else in the world," he said.

"It's not about catching the bad guys as much as limiting their area of operations."

Detective Inspector Bruce van der Graaf, head of the NSW Police Computer Crimes Unit, said he was watching the Queensland Police operation with interest.

"Apart from notifying people that their wireless is unsecure I don't know what else would be achieved by it but if their trial is fruitful we'd always participate in something that works," he said.

The Queensland operation could attract criticism from those who believe police time would be better spent seeking out drug dealers and robbers, but Detective Superintendent Hay said the issue was just as important as any other.

Criminals could steal information from computers on vulnerable networks and also use other people's internet connections to launch malware and other cyber crime attacks.

"If we save mum, grandma and grandpa from losing their life savings, having their identity stolen or losing their kids' inheritance ... you ask them if they think it's a good use of police time and resources," he said.

Smokeless e-cigarettes but with the same toxins

Smokeless e-cigarettesNowadays, consumers have been pampered with choices from email, to e-money to e-girlfriend. And now smokers have another option, i.e. smokeless electronic cigarettes or e-cigarettes (or maybe e-fag). The only bad thing about the smokeless e-cigarettes is that it is still harmful for your health.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced Wednesday that laboratory tests on popular smoking devices known as electronic cigarettes have found they contain carcinogens and other toxic chemicals dangerous to humans.

Known as "e-cigarettes," the devices are battery-operated and contain cartridges filled with nicotine and other chemicals, spiced with flavors such as chocolate, cola or bubble gum.

CNN - FDA and health experts warn against use of e-cigarettes

While manufacturers tout e-cigarettes as a "healthy way" to smoke, federal health officials say the devices turn nicotine, which is highly addictive, and other chemicals into a vapor that is inhaled by the user.

"The FDA is concerned about the safety of these products and how they are marketed to the public," said Dr. Margaret A. Hamburg, commissioner of the FDA.

CNN contacted Florida-based Smoking Everywhere, one of the largest manufacturers of e-cigarettes, after the FDA announcement, and a spokeswoman said the company had no comment.

Because e-cigarettes have not been submitted to the FDA for evaluation or approval, the agency had no way of knowing the levels of nicotine or the amounts or kinds of other chemicals that the various brands of these products deliver to the user. That is why the FDA began to test them.

The FDA's Division of Pharmaceutical Analysis analyzed the ingredients in a small sample of cartridges from two leading brands of e-cigarettes. In releasing its information, the FDA did not identify the two companies, but said in one sample, diethylene glycol -- a chemical used in antifreeze that is toxic to humans -- was detected. Other samples detected carcinogens that are dangerous to those who smoke them, the FDA said.

The FDA has been examining and seizing shipments of non-U.S.-made e-cigarettes at the U.S. border since summer 2008. To date, 50 shipments have been stopped. The products examined thus far meet the definition of a combination drug-device product under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.

"We know very little about these devices, said Dr. Jonathan Samet, director of the Institute for Global Health at the University of Southern California, "but to say they are healthy -- that's highly doubtful."

Samet and other health experts attended the FDA announcement on its findings.

Dr. Jonathan Winickoff, chairman of the American Academy of Pediatrics Tobacco Consortium, said parents need to be aware of e-cigarettes. "It is very important that parents let their children know these are not safe and to make recommendations, or even enforce rules that they not be used," he said.

"Children who use these products may also be using other tobacco products," said Dr. Matthew McKenna, director of the Office of Smoking and Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "It's a good idea to make sure the child is aware of the dangers of tobacco in products in general."

The FDA has been challenged regarding its jurisdiction over certain e-cigarettes in a case pending in federal court. The FDA suggested health care professionals and consumers report serious side effects or product quality problems with the use of e-cigarettes to the FDA's MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting Program either online, by regular mail, fax or phone

Saad bin Laden is dead

U.S. officials believe Saad bin Laden — a son of Osama bin Laden — has been killed by an American missile in Pakistan. Saad bin Laden reportedly spent years under house arrest in Iran before traveling last year to Pakistan, according to former National Intelligence Director Mike McConnell.

It's believed he was killed by Hellfire missiles fired from a U.S. Predator drone sometime this year.

A senior U.S. counterterrorism official tells NPR that without a body to conduct DNA tests on, it's hard to be completely sure. But he characterized U.S. spy agencies as being "80 to 85 percent" certain that Saad bin Laden is dead.

The U.S. counterterrorism official says Saad bin Laden wasn't important enough to target personally — that he was "in the wrong place at the wrong time."

He was active in al-Qaida, but was not a major player, the official said. He was believed to be in his late 20s.

"We make a big deal out of him because of his last name," the official added.

It's not known whether Saad bin Laden was anywhere near his father when he died.

Suicide over missing 4G Phone

missing 4G PhoneThis is probably the first suicide record of a person who killed himself over missing 4G iPhone prototype. The 25-year-old Chinese engineer, Sun Danyong, who worked for Foxconn, jumped from a 12-story building last week. A Chinese newspaper reported that his property had been seized and that he was held in solitary confinement, where he faced "unbearable interrogation techniques" for having lost one of 16 "4G" prototypes. Foxconn apologized, but questioned reports that police beat Sun.

Apple issued a statement this afternoon in response to a report by CNET. A spokeswoman said the Silicon Valley firm is "saddened by the tragic loss of this young employee and we are awaiting results of the investigations into his death. We require our suppliers to treat all workers with dignity and respect."

VentureBeat, AppleInsider and The Register are among the tech sites covering this story.

AppleInsider notes that it's the second piece of bad news for the company recently. Last week an investigation found that 45 of the 83 factories that built iPhones and iPods in 2008 weren't paying valid overtime rates, and that 23 weren't even paying some of their workers China's minimum wage.

4G Explained

The current state of mobile networks is that we use 2.5G and 3G networks—mid-second-gen and newer third-gen data protocols. On the Verizon and Sprint side, known as CDMA, 2.5G is referred to as 1XRTT, or just 1X. On the AT&T and T-Mobile side, GSM, the 2.5G flavor is EDGE. Verizon and Sprint’s 3G is EVDO, while AT&T and T-Mobile have HSDPA (you might not know that one, since they usually just say “3G”).

Second gen wireless was basically just the leap to a digital network, and third gen is a closer attempt at true mobile broadband—kind of. Right now, with their 3G networks, they can all get you typical speeds of around 1 Megabit per second downstream, give or take (though the specs are rated for peak speeds of 3Mbps down on EVDO Rev. A, and 3.6 on HSDPA). 3G has a bit of breathing room left in it—EVDO Rev. B is capable of downstream speeds of 14.7Mbps , while the current HSDPA spec will go up to 14.4Mbps downstream with the right equipment, and depending on how far down the HSPA spec sheet you wanna go, maybe even faster.

But the fourth generation is already on its way. Technically, no wireless technology is officially 4G. But that’s what everybody’s calling WiMax and Long-Term Evolution, because they both promise crazyfast mobile internet speeds that leave the current 3G in the dirt. In the US, the main WiMax player is Clearwire, which Sprint owns 51 percent of after they combined their operations into one company and actually gave WiMax a chance to live. LTE is championed by AT&T (which makes sense because it was developed initially by companies who mainly build GSM networks like AT&T and T-Mobile’s). Verizon also selected LTE, which blew everyone away at first because Verizon isn’t in the GSM camp, but it makes sense because Verizon’s parent company, Vodafone, is gung-ho for LTE in Europe, where everyone’s on GSM.

WiMax and LTE, use the same fundamental technology, they both use orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing access and they’re both IP (internet protocol) based. More simply, you can kind of think of the difference between WiMax and LTE as a software, not a hardware thing (kind of like Macs and PCs using the same Intel chip). Alcatel-Lucent, who makes the 4G wireless hardware, is actually building hardware that is on a common platform. In fact, some point in the future it’s possible to harmonize”LTE and WiMax.

Here’s what the fundamental difference is: Time division duplexing versus frequency division duplexing. AT&T TDD is like CB radios or walkie-talkies—when one person is talking, the other person can’t talk. The same channel is used for downstream and upstream, so the transmission is divided up over very tiny increments of time. Clearwire’s says they currently use a 2/3 downstream and 1/3 upstream split, so 2/3 of the time, you’re swallowing data, and 1/3 of the time. With LTE, it’s more like a modem or phone conversation. It separates the available bandwidth into two parts—one operating downstream full time, and one operating upstream—so you both can talk back and forth at the same time.

The special think about WiMax and LTE is, how fast can they really get. The amswer is, The channel width. LTE and WiMax use really fat wireless channels, so they can move a lot of data at once. For example, peak speed for LTE in 10MHz is about 140Mbps and peak speed in 20MHz is about 300Mbps. The thing about them being OFDM is that it makes them more flexible than 3G, since they can use a wide range of spectrum—LTE can use anything from the 1.4MHz channel up through 20MHz—whereas current 3G always uses 5MHz.

WiMax is no slouch either, technically capable of up to 72Mbps.

Another thing about those superfat channels is that they don’t reach as far out from the tower, and your response drops (obviously) as you get farther away. They’re going to need to build more cell sites. That’s why building out 4G is very pricey. If you thought 3G rollout was slow, 4G might be slower.

Here’s what the real-soon-future looks like: Verizon isn’t dicking around, and is doing commercial rollouts of LTE in 2010, while AT&T is following up with their commercial trials in 2011. (AT&T says Verizon “is in a big rush to move to LTE because their 3G technology gives them no room” to increase bandwidth and that red is a stupid color, nyah nyah nyah.) Clearwire has rolled out WiMax to a few cities already, and plans to have 120 million covered by the end of 2010. Verizon says they’re getting about 60Mbps in testing, but expect it to be more like cable modem speeds when it launches—like Clearwire has now. For the reasons we mentioned above, and also because there won’t be devices that can handle that kind of ridiculous speed—as you probably guessed, battery life being a major reason.

Will one standard eventually beat the other into submission, slinking away into the night, arm and arm with Betamax and HD DVD? Well, LTE does have a lot of momentum—the two biggest carriers in the US are rolling with it, and as part of the GSM family, you can bet all of the GSM carriers all over the world will be on board. In fact, there’s no real technological reason to pick one over the other and just like now where multiple technologies exist for economic reasons, it’ll be the same thing with WiMax and LTE.

Superman Vs Jesus

Someone at thegoodatheist.net made a comparative list to prove that the last son of Krypton is superior to the King of Kings in almost every way. But what’s the point in debating which fictional character is better, anyways? Whatever it is, both superhero will do nothing to stop a kid from ranting and messing up places (because that job goes to the mother).

Superman Vs Jesus

1. Superman has saved the planet for destruction numerous times, the movies that is. Jesus has threatened to return and bring upon the end of the earth with him, but so far is a fucking “no-show”. Maybe Jesus is busy elsewhere.

2. Jesus performed a few miracles, but Superman can shoot laser beams out of his eyes, he can fly, is indestructible, and can see through everything except lead. In one movie he turned back time. How awesome is that?

3. Jesus may have died for your sins, but Superman died to protect us from an intergalactic killing machine called Doomsday.

4. When Jesus died, he was resurrected 3 days later and then abruptly left, telling his disciples he’d be back within their lifetimes (an obvious lie). Superman died, was in stasis for a while, and emerged with long glorious 90’s hair. Unlike Jesus, however, Superman stuck around and has been busy keeping the world safe from evil. And Superman need grows old.

5. Although not a God, Superman still risks his life all the time trying to combat super villains. Jesus, on the other hand, is apparently all powerful, and yet refuses to do something as basic as healing amputees.

6. Superman can move mountains. Jesus claims praying to him will accomplish the same feat, but no noticeable effects from prayer have ever been measured.

7. Superman is an expert in dozens of languages, and is an accomplished journalist. Jesus never left any writings, or evidence of any of his works.

8. Superman hooked up with the insanely hot Lois Lane, while the only women that showed any interest in Jesus were all prostitutes.

9. Jesus said “But those mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me” (Luke 19:27). Superman, on the other hand, has a strict code of conduct that forbids him to kill anyone.

10. If you fell out of your apartment window and cried for help, Superman would try and save you. Not only will Jesus not even bother to save you; he will send you to hell for all eternity if you don’t believe in him.

Solar eclipse a non-event in Malaysia

Solar eclipseMalaysia was expected to experience just a partial solar eclipse from 8am to 10am today. And it turned out that Malaysian astronomers and amateur stargazers are disappointed as “the eclipse of the 21st century” turn out to be a non-event, including no Tsunami. Today’s weather throughout Malaysia looks depressing with thunderstorms occurring in most parts of Malaysia in the morning except in Sarawak, but folks there will only experience about two per cent of the eclipse.

Only five per cent of the eclipse would be visible in Johor whereas it would be 18% in Perlis and 8% in the Klang Valley.

Eclipses used to be ill omens and according to a Chinese astrology, the six minutes and 39 seconds of the eclipse may result in six weeks or six months of misfortune.

In addition to that, Indian Vasthu Sastra Master Yuvaraj Sowma from Chennai urged pregnant women and senior citizens to be extra careful and not to consume food or drink during the eclipse.

Signs Of Job Scams

Signs Of Job Scams"If it seems too good to be true, it probably is." If nothing else, this age-old adage might be the most important piece of advice to remember in your job search, especially in today's volatile job market. Though job scams or phony jobs are prevalent at any point in time, today's tough economic times have increased the amount of scammers looking to take advantage of people desperate to make money and find a job.

With a downturn in the global economy, people who might otherwise be skeptical want to find a silver lining and too often mistake the glitz and glamour promises of a scammer's ad for their path to financial security.

Researchers at Staffcentrix screen about 5,000 home jobs leads every week, and there is a "56-to-one scam ratio" among work-at-home job ads. Any opportunity where you can "make money fast," "no experience is necessary," "small investment, big return" or "work in your pajamas" is appealing to people, so they get thrown into the scam mix. It is always the greed factor that clouded your mind.

People are trying to capitalize on the strong desire for work and income in different populations and communities. So don't fall for get-rich-quick schemes, work-at-home scams, pyramid schemes and numerous other approaches promising employment and wealth but being used to separate job seekers from their money.

Who's the target of job scams?

Anyone seeking a better job opportunity or looking to earn some real money -- even smart people -- can get sucked into scams. With the wide scope of the Internet, every bogus "job" can reach hundreds of thousands of people.

Victims of work-at-home scams are typically -- and unfortunately -- those who can least afford to part with their money. For one particular scam reviewed by Staffcentrix, the demographics were primarily female, between the ages of 18-49, with children, less affluent and who did not have a college education.

There also signs in a rise in the number of seniors and retirees falling prey to these cons, as many of them are now looking for ways to supplement their income due to the declining stock market and even job layoffs.

How to spot a job scam

While identifying a scam seems like it would be easy, you must remember that the people who create them are seasoned con artists. Many scams are linked to what seem like legitimate Web sites that have professional photos, testimonials, audio and video -- all the things that can convince someone that it must be real. But with anything Internet, it call be copied, duplicated, photoshoped and faked.

Here are some things to keep in mind when spotting a job scam:

1. Hold tight to your cash

No legitimate employer asks you for money. This is a foolproof tip off that something's not right. There are a number of scams that work this way. You deposit your money in an offshore account and wait for your investment to make you wealthy, or you purchase a list of high-paying jobs you can do from home. Whatever the scam is, don't fall for it. If this really works, I can ensure you that all legitimate banks would have taken all of those investment and make money for themselves.

2. Make money while you sleep!

Beware of ads that make outrageous claims, don't specify job duties and don't require that you send a résumé. Legitimate employers are seeking candidates with specific skills, knowledge and education. Watch for ads, even for entry-level jobs, that use the phrase 'no experience necessary,' especially when there is a promise of big money.

3. "Work at home" appears in the header

'Work from home' is not a job title. It can supplement your income or treat it as a source for additional pocket money. If it appears in the ad header, there's a good chance it's a come on. Scammers can rarely resist including it in the header -- it's the bait of their 'hook' as they fish for desperate people to reel in.

4. Miracles arrive in your inbox

How could this man from Germany have known you were looking for home-based work? Miracles do happen, but not via SPAM. Move [the e-mail] to your trash file without using the 'remove me from this list' or 'unsubscribe me' link you're likely to find at the bottom of the page. These links are often used to confirm that your -email address is active and using them can result in even more SPAM. If you are using Yahoo Mail or GMail, open the mail and click the "Spam" button.

5. Palm trees, mansions, beaches and bikinis

Successful scammers often bag their prey by dangling enticing things in front of them -- much like kidnappers do. 'If you get into my car I'll give you this candy bar...'

6. Put on your detective hat

There are essentially two ways to get listed with the Better Business Bureau: Buy a membership or get reported for bad business practices.

While the absence of a company's name in their listings is not unusual -- not every business is a paying member of the BBB -- a C, D or F rating and multiple complaints are a flashing warning signal.

You must also be careful about ads that look legitimate and that contain the name and Web site of well-known companies but carry a "free" e-mail address for a reply. That's an obvious sign of a scam.

Reputable companies have been victimized by scammers using their company names and reputations to scam unwitting job seekers. Always take the time to stop by the company Web site before responding to a job ad. You may find a notice warning you of the scam. What you won't find, is a job listing for someone to accept checks and wire funds to someone.

Too little, too late

Unfortunately, many job seekers still fall victim to job scams, informed or not. So what happens when you realize that you're involved in something you probably shouldn't be?

Consequences include identity theft, loss of savings, unauthorized charges to your credit card or, at worst, a run-in with the law. At minimum, you lose some money and a little pride, but consider it a lesson learned.

From Taser Shock Into Flames

Taser ShockAn Aussie man, who doused himself with gasoline and charged at an officer, burst into flames when he was hit with a Taser, police in Australia said Tuesday.

"He was carrying a lighter and pouring himself with petrol," said Inspector Bill Munnee with the West Australian Police. "We don't know if the lighter set it off or something from the Taser."

Authorities have launched an inquiry into what happened Monday when an officer arrived at the 36-year-old man's house in the remote desert community of Warburton.

Police had received a report that the man and some others were sniffing glue, Munnee said.

At the sight of the arriving officers, the man ran out of the house with a container of gasoline and a cigarette lighter, police said.

When he ignored the officer's command to stop, the officer fired his Taser stun gun -- and the man "caught alight," Munnee said.

When used, some stun guns emit an electric spark as they deliver an electric current. The jolt of electricity inhibits voluntary control of muscles, temporarily incapacitating the person.

While the officer tried to put out the fire, a woman from inside the house threw rocks at him, Munnee said. The officer suffered both burns from the fire and cuts from the rocks.

The man was airlifted to a hospital in the Western Australian capital of Perth, where he is undergoing treatment for severe burns.

Police charged him with assault with intent to prevent arrest and possession of a deleterious substance. The rock-throwing woman was charged with assaulting a public officer.

"He has an extensive record of very violent behavior toward police and people," Munnee said of the man. "He's not Mother Teresa or the Pope."

Two years ago, a man in Texas died in a similar incident when he too caught fire after he was shot with a Taser. In that case as well, the man had poured gasoline on himself and was resisting arrest.

There's no charge for love

no charge for loveA farmer had some puppies he needed to sell. He painted a sign advertising the 4 pups and set about nailing it to a post on the edge of his yard. As he was driving the last nail into the post, he felt a tug on his overalls. He looked down into the eyes of a little boy.

"Mister," he said, "I want to buy one of your puppies."

"Well," said the farmer, as he rubbed the sweat off the back of his neck, "These puppies come from fine parents and cost a good deal of money."

The boy dropped his head for a moment. Then reaching deep into his pocket, he pulled out a handful of change and held it up to the farmer.

"I've got thirty-nine cents. Is that enough to take a look?"

"Sure," said the farmer. And with that he let out a whistle.. "Here, Dolly!" he called.

Out from the doghouse and down the ramp ran Dolly followed by four little balls of fur.

The little boy pressed his face against the chain link fence. His eyes danced with delight. As the dogs made their way to the fence, the little boy noticed something else stirring inside the doghouse.

Slowly another little ball appeared, this one noticeably smaller. Down the ramp it slid. Then in a somewhat awkward manner, the little pup began hobbling toward
the others, doing its best to catch up...

"I want that one," the little boy said, pointing to the runt. The farmer knelt down at the boy's side and said, "Son, you don't want that puppy. He will never be able
to run and play with you like these other dogs would."

With that the little boy stepped back from the fence, reached down, and began rolling up one leg of his trousers.

In doing so he revealed a steel brace running down both sides of his leg attaching itself to a specially made shoe.

Looking back up at the farmer, he said, "You see sir, I don't run too well myself, and he will need someone who understands."

With tears in his eyes, the farmer reached down and picked up the little pup..

Holding it carefully he handed it to the little boy.

"How much?" asked the little boy. "No charge," answered the farmer, "There's no charge for love."

The world is full of people who need someone who understands.

Negotiate Higher Salary - How to

Negotiate Higher Salary - How toIn an economic climate where international unemployment is at a severe level how do you negotiate for the salary you are worth when you do land your next job? What are some of the qualities you want to bring forward in the negotiation process? Is it a good idea to be assertive in this climate? Or should you just take what's offered and thank your lucky stars?

There is always more than one answer to these kinds of questions depending on the employer, industry, experience, job, who you are negotiating with. The truth is that even in this economic climate, companies still need talent and when they find someone that has it they will do what they can to hire them, with the right price. If you make a reasonable request for a salary that is within the realm of what they can afford and maintains fairness with other employees in the company doing similar work, then more than likely they will fulfill your request. Therefore, I encourage you not to jump at just accepting any offer.

First, do your homework. Second, choose whether or not to negotiate. Third, decide if it is appropriate for you to accept the offer. I can already hear some of you suggesting that in hard times you will take what you can get. I do think this is understandable, especially in this economic climate. However, even in a changing economy I believe you can obtain the salary you deserve that is commensurate with the experience and value you bring to an organization.

Tips for effective negotiation for higher salary:

1. Know your worth

Take the time to know your salary value. With salary calculators all over the internet it is easy to gather the information that will help you match research with actual experience. At www.salary.com you can gather numbers based on location, industry, job, level of experience. Of course, one of the most important factors that you won't get from a salary calculator is the value of your success and accomplishments. Research should also include information gathering specifically related to your industry and other people in the industry doing your work. For instance, If you are being considered for a Senior Financial Analyst role at a law firm, gather salary data for SFA's at other law firms and the one where you are being considered. This will help give you a realistic idea of what you can expect in an offer.

2. Know Thy Self

What is your bottom line salary that will support you in feeling valued and in meeting your financial needs? What are other factors you consider in negotiation? For instance, autonomy and creativity for some people are critical factors worth a couple of thousand dollars off of a compensation package. How heavily do you weigh a comprehensive benefits plan against your salary? What other non-financial elements will fulfill you in your work? Is it worth it to you to take 2k less for a position with a company down the block than one for which you have to drive across town?

3. Know Your Performance

When you are negotiating a low offer with a potential employer, and have total faith in your ability to succeed in the role, consider your willingness to base your raise or bonus on your performance. I suggest you be very specific by taking initiative in setting milestones and deadlines. Let the potential employer know that you want a higher salary, but are willing to receive it as a reward. Here's an example: if you reach or go beyond your milestones within the first 3-6 months, ask them to agree to give you the salary bump you are requesting.

4. Know the company

Knowing how badly the company needs to fill the role in question could support your negotiating. You could find this out a few ways. It may come across during the interview or by talking with other people in the industry or even by the date on a job posting (if a position has been open for 6 months they may be in dire need of filling it). I recently had a career coaching client who went on vacation. While she was away a company she interviewed with was desperately trying to track her down. For some reason they had an outdated resume on file (she had provided them with a current one) that had old contact information. Had I known how the CFO tried to track her down and how grateful he was when he finally got a hold of her before the offer was made, I would have encouraged her to ask for even more than she did.

5. Know When to Jump

I know that based on previous comments on my prior "career lessons" articles that some of you will label what I am about to say as Psycho-babble. That does not make it any less true. When the offer call comes in, and the person on the other end of the phone tells you how wonderful you are and how much they want you to accept the job; I suggest you take a breath, maintain composure, and ask them for a day or two to think about it. Even if you know you want the job. When you are at offer stage all the other candidates are placed far on the back burner. It is also possible that you are the only candidate out of the bunch to whom they would even consider making an offer. In this case, they can't afford to have you decline the offer. Asking them to give you time to make the decision helps put you in a powerful negotiating position by simply triggering a greater sense of urgency and desire to do what they can to fulfill your requests. It doesn't mean they will, but any employer worth working with will try. However, maintain respect during this process. Let them know specifically that you sincerely appreciate the offer, you are seriously considering it, and that you will call them back on a specific day and time to let them know how you intend to proceed.

Approach negotiating with diplomacy, respect, and professionalism. Possessing your facts, confidence, and faith in your value and ability positions you as an ally with your potential employer. This increases their desire to work with you, and do their best to fulfill your salary and compensation requests. Even in a volatile economy!

Negotiating Salary Tips (Be prepared if you are going to ask for a raise).

For someone who is employed one of the hardest things to do is trying to negotiate their salary. Many people are afraid to confront their boss about a possible pay raise and have no idea as to how to approach the issue. And, once they do get a chance to talk about their pay they do not know how to effectively make a case for a salary hike.

Understanding how to properly and effectively negotiate your salary is an important aspect of your job. Sometimes you can not just wait for the next pay raise, and you need to confront the issue. This article should help you with some tips on negotiating your salary.

A very common mistake that many people make when trying to speak with their boss about their salary is that they are unrealistic with their requests. You can not try and increase your salary by some ridiculous amount because you feel you deserve it. You have to be reasonable with your requests. Understand where you are with in the company and try to work from a reasonable stand point when asking for a pay increase.

If you are going to ask for a raise then you need to have something to prove what you are worth. For people who are just being hired you should bring in proof of your salary from a previous job. This shows your future boss what you were being paid and that you are not just making numbers up.

If you are asking for a raise then bring in some form of performance goals that you have met or things that you have done to go above and beyond your daily workload. Do not expect to go to your boss and ask for a raise just because you want one or feel like you deserve it. You need to have reasonable proof that shows you are worthy of the next level.

You are going to need to need to be flexible. Expecting a direct raise in your base salary may not be realistic, but if you look at other ways to increase your overall compensation then you may get more out of your negotiations. Instead of just concentrating on a higher salary, maybe think about getting some form of bonus or an increase in your health insurance plans. This may make it easier on the company, in a cost effective way, to help both you and the company out.

Going to your boss and simply asking for a raise is going to be tough to do. One way to possibly grab his or her attention is to come up with some form of performance goals for yourself. This way the company will see a benefit from your hard work and you can be rewarded.

These are all great ways to approach your boss next time you look for a raise. The most important part is being prepared and being realistic.
