Money doesn't buy happiness

Money doesn't buy happinessMoney doesn't buy happiness or does it?. This well-known phrase is said by those rich people who have lots of money but are not happy. To poor people including me, I can do with some money and probably it can make me happy. If managed probably, you can do a lot of stuff with money.

Back to the real world, we sure can have a great time fantasizing about having tonnes of money. Imagined what you'd do, where you'd go and how you'd start spending all your not-yet-won bags of loot. Read also Who is Richer? Who is Happier?

Would you quit your day job on the right away? Buy a new house and car? Donate millions to your favourite cause? Hop the first plane to wherever? Give money to your favourite relatives and even a few deadbeats, too?

Would you: Get an uber-posh Birkin bag, schedule the lipo, buy the season's tickets, own the island and just work at not working? But we've heard it time and again: Money doesn't buy happiness. Asked yourself, did money make happiness for Michael Jackson. Read also Michael Jackson's Millions.

It's a catchy sentiment to be sure, but try offering that nugget of wisdom to the guy collecting bottles to survive or the university student living on Ramen noodles for months at a time.

If we're Zen-like and all in touch with our inner peace, there might be truth in that four-word phrase. But, if we're being honest, cash is king. Shallow as that may be, money does indeed buy a bit of glee.

And having deep, deep pockets would be downright orgasmic. Money doesn’t buy you happiness but it buys you a big enough yacht to sail right up to it. Sound like a temporary enjoyment. At least he is happy for a short moment. Most people would loved having a "beautiful home, or homes" and it is "really fantastic to have your own jet, and anybody who says it isn't is lying to you. Ah, the burden of money.

For the teeming masses who don't wade in wads of cash, having a fully stocked bank account that will never, ever run out seems downright delicious. Or maybe it's just me. Sure, life may get more complicated with extra cash but, as reasonably functioning, emotionally intelligent adults, I'm guessing most of us would be happily up for the challenge.

However, having more money doesn't necessarily bring as much happiness as we assume and having less money won't make us as miserable as we think, either.

People overestimate the magnitude of the relationship between money and happiness, particularly at the lower end of the income spectrum. But the people with less money aren't as miserable as everyone assumes. This is helpful given a recession in which many people are reducing their spending.

The truth is revealed

Money does buy a bit of happiness, even if it's not as gleeful as us average earners believe. So, when it comes down to it, the moneyed are a happy lot. And I, for one, would be happy with a lot of their money.
