Hypocrisy of Earth Day 2009

Hypocrisy of Earth DayEarth Day or EarthDay which was celebrated on March 21, 1970 has firmly established for all time on a sound basis as an annual event to deepen reverence and care for life on our planet. Earth Day 2009, April 22, will mark the beginning of the Green Generation Campaign ! This two-year initiative will culminate with the 40th anniversary of Earth Day in 2010.

With negotiations for a new global climate agreement coming up in December, Earth Day 2009 must be a day of action and civic participation, to defend the Green Generation’s core principles:
* A carbon-free future based on renewable energy that will end our common dependency on fossil fuels, including coal.
* An individual’s commitment to responsible, sustainable consumption.
* Creation of a new green economy that lifts people out of poverty by creating millions of quality green jobs and transforms the global education system into a green one.

The hype and hypocrisy of this event is that the planet's dependency of fossil fuels will be greatly reduced only when the big automobile companies such as GM, Chrysler and Toyota companies closed shop and less people use their petrol cars. And about the green economy, it will not improve until countries like China and India put a stop to their advancement into an industrialized country. See alsoTop 10 World's Most Polluted Places

Talking about China, after the Maoist period in China, the remaining figureheads of the early Communist movement realized that the only way for their country to go anywhere was to modernize. Modernization has a high price, a speedy one has an even higher price.

As for individual's commitment, it is not the lifestyle of the people in smaller or poorer nation that's jeopardizing the climate ... it's the consumption in the rich western countries.
