This is where networking websites and community forums come in. Many professional web developers use these communication mediums for networking, for discussing recent developments in their occupation or industry and for asking questions of one another. Anyone involved in opportunity recruiting, a job search, or career exploration, can benefit from getting actively involved in these online public discussions. This is the best place to learn about current trends and developments and the interests and concerns of those involved in online communities.

Social networks on the Internet connect people with all different types of interests and are now a large part of the Internet experience. Social networks are groups of individuals and businesses interacting via the Internet to form an online community. There is a strong bond among the members, and virtual communities form when people carry on public discussions long enough, with sufficient human feeling, to form webs of personal relationships.

I think Facebook and MySpace are great ways to catch up with old friends and socialize. Unfortunately after spending years using both I realize that neither of them are really focused on helping small businesses drive revenue.

Let's face it, the point of business networking is to help both parties drive revenue.

So getting beyond the hype of Facebook leaves small business owners with a plethora of options in the form of specialized niche sites like Referral Key and Active Rain.

If you are serious about building alliances as opposed to voyeuristic browsing of relationships since past, I suggest you get proactive about searching for niche tools dedicated to your work.
