Olympic Snippets - US Women demolish China in Basketball

Only the night before, the United States Men's Basketball team defeated China with a triple-digit score, and on August 11 the US Women's team racked up 108 points of their own, demolishing China 108-63 in a group B preliminary game on day two of the Olympic Women's Basketball tournament.

The defending Olympic champion United States proved to be a class above host China, stifling the perimeter shooting of their opponents and scoring almost enough to match the team's record of 114 points in a game.

China, though backed by enthusiastic home fans, only made 18 of 47 (38%) of their two-point attempts and buried just four of 16 (25%) from behind the arc, compared to 41 of 71 (58%) on two-pointers and 5 of 10 (50%) threes from the World No.1 United States.

Tina Thompson was the top scorer for the winning side, pouring in 27 points and pulling down five rebounds. Sylvia Fowles added 18 points while Candace Parker netted 12, and captain Lisa Leslie had a double-double with 10 points plus 10 rebounds.

Host China got double-digit baskets from captain Miao Lijie with 16 points and Chen Nan with 14. Shao Tingting and Chen Xiaoli contributed eight points apiece.
